Kentucky Senate postpones scheduled vote on much-debated pension

"We've really spent over a week trying to bring the two sides together", said Sen. "There are just some fundamental differences in approaches, and that was the main thing".

The appropriation for state Treasurer Dennis Milligan's office authorizes 33 positions and spending authority of $5.3 million for operations and $275,000 for investment operations in fiscal 2019, which starts July 1.

House members voted 106-9 to approve the payday loan bill (SB 920), which also easily cleared the Senate on Saturday.

Houses of West Virginia's Legislature disagree over a bill dealing with food stamp eligibility.

The bill passed by a 34-3 vote, and now heads to the House.

What hasn't been decided is exactly where education stands. "With that being said, our students are always our biggest priority", Beckett said.

The $54.5 million in funding is a slight increase from an original Senate proposal of $53 million. "And if the idea is to burn the (rainy day account) up so we don't have to make a decision, then so be it".

Not everyone seemed to think that was a wise strategy.

House Democrats had declined to vote for the bill over their objections to the language.

"The wisdom of it remains to be tested, I guess", he said.

"We have a zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment", Negron said. "We're absolutely doing it", said Gov. Jim Justice, (R) West Virginia.

"Yeah, that's frustrating", he said. The House killed the Senate bill, and the Senate stripped the House bill of its revenue provisions.

It looks like Wyoming has a budget for the next two years.

In other words, each chamber could kill the other's education bill.

Lawmakers from both legislative chambers have to decide moving forward which items they're willing to compromise on and what, if anything, should be included in the ongoing budget negotiations.

On Thursday, Burns told his colleagues that the amendment to cut schools had been removed from the budget.

But in the end, the Senate chose not to take up the House version at all.

"People above my paygrade are going to negotiate that", Burns said.

This set off an uproar on social media, as supporters of the bill claimed that the opposition was in support of child marriage, "kids marrying adults", and "the legalized rape of children". Bevin, Kentucky's Republican governor, says the true number is far higher than that.

Late action in the Senate seemed to support that theory.

It took a bit of a fight for Senate Bill 48 to be heard: last week, news broke that concerns over parents' rights had delayed the bill's progress twice before.

A bill that would require government entities to establish formal sexual harassment policies passed the House, but in the Senate, where sexual harassment scandals cost multiple members their jobs a year ago, the bill stalled out.

House Judiciary Chairman John Shott said lawmakers at least need to talk over changes that were made in the bill. "We're going to get out of here on time and save the taxpayers money", said Del.
