Karti Chidambaram in Tihar Jail till March 24

Karti Chidambaram's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom.

Observing the counsel's submission, the court said that the apprehension raised by senior counsel of the accused can not be ignored keeping in view his social status, but more specifically, due to his father's, who is former a Union Minister. The court fixed the hearing on Karti's bail plea on March 15. "The lock up incharge and the jail superintendent of Tihar jail, are directed to provide and ensure proper safety and security to the accused during the judicial custody as per rules", he said.

"Only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in a separate prison", the court said.

The CBI produced Karti, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, in a Delhi court after his three-day police custody expired and sought 15-day judicial custody. The court also rejected his counsel's request that he be allocated a separate cell for himself in judicial custody. "Some of the accused related to those cases are lodged in Tihar so I apprehend a great threat to my security", he said. The second is to allow the CBI to bring the Mukherjeas to Delhi from Mumbai and identify the places where they met Karti Chidambaram. Karti will be now kept in remand till March 24.

The high court, which took up the issue on its own after judges from Tamil Nadu forwarded the tweets made by the editor to it, said one of the two tweets by the senior scribe was "directly attacking the Supreme Court". He has been in CBI custody for questioning since his arrest from Chennai Airport on February 28.

The former finance minister's son is being investigated by the CBI for laundering money he received as payoffs to facilitate investment approval in INX Media when his father was the country's finance minister.

On Friday, the CBI moved two more applications, seeking court permission to confront Karti Chidambaram with his Chartered Accountant S. Bhaskararaman, arrested last month. It, however, later revised the figure to United States dollars 1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).

The fresh evidence in the case, which triggered Karti Chidambaram's arrest, was based on the statement of Indrani Mukerjea, former director of INX Media (P) Ltd, who recorded it under section 164 of CrPC before a magistrate on February 17.
