Givenchy dead: French fashion designer dies at 91

French haute couture fashion designer, Hubert de Givenchy has died, confirmed Givenchy brand. French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy died aged 91 it was announced on 12 March 2018.

His family - his father was the marquis of Givenchy - had hoped their son would become a lawyer but the young man, who stood 1.96 meters (6 feet 5 inches) tall, was drawn to fashion and design from a young age, moving to Paris to study at 17.

According to The Squander, Givenchy's net worth at the time of his death was in excess of $100 million.

These included a hôtel particulier decorated with paintings by Matisse and Picasso in Paris and an exceedingly grand chateau in France, the 16th-century Manoir du Jonchet. "He revolutionized global fashion in creating the timeless looks for Audrey Hepburn, his friend and muse for more than 40 years".

Fashion mogul Bernard Arnault, head of the giant LVMH group which now owns Givenchy, led the tributes, saying that Givenchy "was one of the creators who put Paris at the summit of world fashion in the 1950s".

He became close friends with Audrey Hepburn, designing the black dress that she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

In 1988, The House of Givenchy was sold to LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

It was also the Givenchy look that former U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy adopted for her White House years, sticking to a uniform of shifts dresses, pillbox hats and low-heeled pumps.

Other big names dressed by Givenchy include Grace Kelly.

Givenchy retired in 1995, and was succeeded by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald, Italy's Riccardo Tisci and its current chief designer, Clare Waight Keller, the first woman in the role.
