Drew Brees Rumors: Vikings, 'QB-Needy Teams' Have Contacted Saints QB

Well, well, well. Just when it seemed like Kirk Cousins-to-the-Vikings was a foregone conclusion, another report comes out that has everyone suddenly pumping the breaks.

On Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported the Minnesota Vikings called about Brees.

The New Orleans Saints failed to reach a contract extension with Brees before the legal tampering period opened Monday, which means any National Football League team can now make the veteran quarterback an offer.

The New Orleans Saints failed to work out a contract extension with Drew Brees prior to Monday, which means the quarterback's agent is now free to negotiate with and field offers from other teams. Signing Brees to a two-year, $60 million deal would allow Minnesota to maximize its window while also keeping the cap clean for when Brees eventually hangs it up.

Pelissero is right. Brees is technically a free agent, but everyone expects the 39 year old to return to New Orleans. It is now March 9, five days until Brees's contract expires and the $18 million in dead money hits the Saints, and no deal has been agreed on. And they're title contenders, having knocked off the Saints in the playoffs to make the NFC Championship Game. It's always been assumed Brees and New Orleans would find common ground on a new short-term deal with the club coming off its best season since winning the Super Bowl in 2009.

Strief arrived in New Orleans months after Hurricane Katrina and got to be part of the rebirth of both the city and the team, which won its first Super Bowl in the 2009 season.

Day 1 of the "legal tampering" period has not disappointed.

Much of this remains hypothetical, and the most likely result is still Brees signing with the Saints.

What happens if the Vikes can't close the deal on either Cousins or Brees?
