Donald Trump sacks Rex Tillerson as US Secretary of State

There had been longstanding rumours throughout most of Mr Tillerson's tenure of friction between Mr Trump and his secretary of state, a former Exxon Mobile Corp chief executive officer. In October, NBC reported that Tillerson called the president a "moron" following a meeting in July.

Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Steve Goldstein, said on Monday, March 12 that Tillerson would end his trip early to deal with work that needs to be attended to in Washington, D.C.

The president continued, "Gina Haspel, the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be nominated to replace Director Pompeo and she will be the CIA's first-ever female director, a historic milestone".

Goldstein said, "We wish Secretary Pompeo well".

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

Tillerson just returned from a trip overseas to Chad and Nigeria, before cutting his trip short to refocus on North Korea.

Gina Haspel, the deputy director of the CIA, will replace Pompeo if confirmed by the Senate, becoming the first female director of that agency. Trump offered no explanation for the change.
