Credit card payments for trips expanded across ferries, light rail

"In an Australian first, we're expanding the trial to ferries and light rail of contactless payments - the use of smart watches, smartphones, credit cards", Constance said.

Be sure to separate the card you're using from other cards in your wallet, so the right one is charged.

Any American Express, Mastercard or Visa card with contactless technology enabled can now be used to tap on and off on select public transport in Sydney, after being trialled exclusively with Mastercard payments on the Manly Ferry in January.

The new system means passengers can touch on with their actual money cards, paying directly for a one-time trip and avoiding the need to join long queues to either purchase or top up an Opal card.

However, the bad news is Opal benefits such as travel caps and discounted fares after a number of trips in a week don't apply when using contactless payments.

You can now use a phone (linked to your American Express, Visa or Mastercard) to pay for ferries and light rail trips in Sydney.

The "contactless payment scheme" came into play on Monday and is expected to be rolled out to trains before the end of the year, said NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

"It's great news for customer choice and convenience, and it's certainly a model of delivery which complements what is a wonderful foundation when it comes to Opal".

Open payment will not replace Opal, which is now used by almost 14 million people a week but will provide freedom of choice when it comes to paying for travel. In December 2017, the Opal system was opened to third party private operators, through OpalPay. "The Opal system is here to stay, and of course attached to the Opal system are all the benefits", says Constance.

This has been adapted from the technology in London where the contactless "pay as you go" bank card, is used for over 2.1 million contactless journeys on its bus, Tube and rail services every day.

And you still can't buy a ticket for the tram either on-board or at the vast majority of stops in Melbourne.
