Atari Unveils the Atari VCS "Video Computer System" and its Controllers

Codenamed Ataribox since last summer, the retro-inspired gaming and entertainment platform will be known as the Atari VCS (Video Computer System). That's why the company took the first step to showcase its new console: Atari Video Computer System (Atari VCS), which stands out for its design and the integration of 2 control options.

The prototypes featuring the classic and modern Atari controller will be on display as prototypes at GDC 2018 between March 21st and March 22nd.

To prove it's serious, the company has released additional images of the Atari VCS along with Classic Joystick - based, naturally, on the black-and-red joystick supplied with the original Atari 2600 - and Modern Controller accessories, and is showing the functional prototypes off at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) this week. But Atari said it has plenty in store for the product that will make it more than just a "retro-box".

Finally, Atari revealed that in the next month of April they will inform about the release date on which they will begin the pre-sale phase and will give more details about the new console. The console runs run Linux and come preloaded with "tons of classic Atari retro games" while at the same time being capable of delivering a "full PC experience for the TV".

Now, Atari has revealed a greater look at its new device, along with a confirmation of a name change.

'Every person at Atari and every partner involved with the new platform is just as fanatical about the brand and its heritage as our biggest fans are, ' claims Michael Arzt, Atari chief operating officer of Connected Devices, the division behind the freshly-rebranded Ataribox. Atari owns and/or manages a portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, including world-renowned brands like Asteroids®, Centipede®, Missile Command®, Pong® and RollerCoaster Tycoon. It was a hard decision with the countdown underway, but we weren't willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment.

Atari is making a bold return, after unveiling the Atari VCS console.

Interestingly, the console will enable gamers to play some lower level PC titles as well as the Atari back catalogue.
