Arvind Kejriwal writes to PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi, seeks meeting on sealing

It seems that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is likely to up the ante against the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of sealing in Delhi. "Traders earn their livelihood honestly and pay tax".

Condemning the hardships the ceiling has imposed on traders, Kejriwal said, "The traders are on the verge of starvation and each shop is means of livelihood for many people". The Chief Minister also said on Friday that he would launch a hunger strike if the issue is not resolved by March 31.

He said it was indeed very sad that both the Centre and the Delhi government were not properly handling the issue. While the traders claim that the sealing at Amar Colony market is illegal as the stretch is notified under the commercial street and running commercial activity is legal, SDMC, in its clarification, has said that the shops were sealed because of violations of law. In the letter to Prime Minister Modi, the Delhi CM emphasized on bringing a Bill in Parliament to remove irregularities in the law that are the causes behind sealing of commercial establishments and cautioned that unemployment produced by the drive might impact law and order situation in the national capital. There is only one solution now.

"The proposals of DDA (Delhi Development Authority) for amendment in Master Plan 2021 are very confusing since every proposal contain certain riders and conditions which are hard to follow and as such the basic object of bringing proposals to provide relief to traders from sealing will be highly defeated, according to prominent traders", it said.

Reaching out to Rahul, he said that parties should rise above politics to find a solution to the problem. Kejriwal wrote to Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, requesting him to raise his voice against the issue in Parliament. Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has called for a Delhi Trade Bandh on March 13 against the ongoing sealing drive initiated by the local bodies on the directions of a monitoring committee appointed by the Supreme Court.
