Amid aircraft crunch, IndiGo cancels 42 flights today

The IndiGo flight that was grounded on Monday was an Airbus 320 Neo aircraft with a Pratt and Whitney engine. His comments came after the aviation regulator DGCA grounding 11 A320Neo planes with faulty Pratt & Whitney engines.

Three other IndiGo A320neo planes have been on the ground since February following similar engine problems. In an announcement on its website during the day, IndiGo said it has cancelled 47 flights across its domestic network for today.

"Following the grounding of our six A320 Neo in accordance with the directive of the DGCA, we cancelled less than 5 percent of our flights today".

IndiGo, which operates 1,000-odd flights per day, has had to replace Pratt & Whitney engines on its 32 A320 Neo aircraft at least 69 times in the period May 2016-November 2017. Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Bhubaneswar, Srinagar, Amritsar and Guwahati have been canceled.

The aviation sector in the country may remain affected with IndiGo and GoAir likely to face more disruptions in the coming weeks. "Alternate arrangements are made or offered to minimise impact and inconvenience; in cases where appropriate, free cancellation and re-booking options have been made available", the airline said.

In the national capital, Prabhu said the planes have been grounded only for passenger safety.

Yesterday, a Lucknow bound Indigo flight from the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad, with 186 passengers on board, had to return and make an emergency landing because of a technical snag in the engine. "We have to give paramount priority to safety".

Citing safety of aircraft operations, the DGCA said, A320neos fitted with PW1100 engines beyond ESN 450 have been grounded with immediate effect. However, there is no reason to panic, because the airlines are constantly on the effort to minimize the trouble on part of the passengers.
