A Company Is Building 3D-Printed Homes For Just $10000

Jason Ballard, one of ICON's three founders says, "One of the big challenges is how are we going to create habitats in space", "You're not going to open a two by four and open screws".

New Story has already built 850 units for those in need, but after teaming with Icon, they were able to lower the price of a home from $6,000 to $4,000.

One billion people on Earth lack access to adequate housing - but that could change if ICON and New Story are successful.

For this venture, ICON is collaborating with New Story, a California-based non-profit that describes itself as a "non-profit working to create a world where no human being lives in survival mode".

A prototype house has been built in Austin, Texas, and the team plans to build a 100-home community in El Salvador.

However, before these homes are built, ICON is planning to trial the model by 3D printing an office in Austin.

"ICON believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci added. ICON has unveiled the Vulcan 3D printer at SXSW Festival, a manufacturing solution that could eventually provide homeless or struggling families with a roof over their heads. The printer gives out a custom blend of concrete that hardens as it's printed. The strength of the printed walls are said to be stronger than cinderblocks after a few days of hardening, but the house is entirely habitable after it's been set up.

There are other groups which are working on printing houses. However, ICON thinks that its structure is the first printed house that's been considered habitable by a local government.

With 3D printing emerging throughout the construction industry, the technology is becoming a groundbreaking production tool for affordable and sustainable housing.
