Nehal Hashmi shifted to jail hospital due to chest pain

The Supreme Court had served Hashmi with a contempt notice following a speech to workers in Karachi a year ago, in which he had threatened the prime minister's unidentified enemies.

According to the former chief justice, a remedy was available to help one out of such situations.

"Remember, you are in service now but you will retire one day, we will make it hard for you and your family to live in Pakistan", Hashmi had said in the video.

As the verdict was announced, Hashmi was taken into custody by police from the courtroom. On May 31, the apex court took notice of his threatening remarks, staring a trial that ran for eight months.

The three-judge bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel, issuing the written order, also sent Hashmi behind bar for one month.

The court ruled that Hashmi can not hold public office for five years according to Article 63 (1)(g) of the Constitution.

He breathed fire at the judges during his speech at PML-N's rally in Jarranwala, where PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz also criticised the judiciary.

Speaking during a programme on a private news channel, Iftikhar Chaudhry said that Hashmi had shown complete disregard for the judiciary while directing indecent and harsh remarks at those who were investigating the Panama Papers case involving the Sharif family.

"He attacked the judiciary, the judges and those who were tasked by this court to investigate some allegations of criminal conduct on the part of the respondent's political leader, his family and others".

Hashmi had targeted "enemies" of the former prime minister whose disqualification case was being heard by judges of the apex court at that time.

'It has been common knowledge for years that a large number of Pakistani citizens, who are residents of Pakistan and are maintaining accounts in foreign countries without disclosing the same to the authorities competent under the laws of Pakistan or paying taxes on the same in accordance with law, observed Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar while dictating an order in the open court.

He said the court would instead issue a contempt of court notice in order to alert the person on what the consequences of their acts could be.

"The belated apology submitted by the respondent after about seven months of commencement of these proceedings and at the fag end of such proceedings, when the evidence of the prosecution has already been completely recorded and closed, speaks volumes about the apology being an afterthought".

In July, Hashmi was charged with "contempt of court" under Article 204 (2) of the Constitution of Pakistan, read with Section 3 of the Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003.
