'Spotlight' screenwriter: Law did not deserve Vatican funeral

Law's successor as Boston's archbishop, Cardinal Sean O'Malley, reacted to Law's death in part by apologizing to victims of sex abuse by clergy.

On the day in 2005 that Law eulogized his own protector, John Paul, I wrote that he should have stayed home instead of showing up as he did, surrounded by a security detail that treated the two American survivors of clerical abuse who'd come to peacefully protest outside the basilica as if they were the criminals.

Cardinal Law had been one of the most powerful and respected USA bishops until his legacy was blemished by the devastating sexual abuse of minors by priests in his Archdiocese of Boston.

Pope Francis prayed at the end: "May he be given a merciful judgment so that redeemed from death, freed from punishment, reconciled to the Father, carried in the arms of the Good Shepherd, he may deserve to enter fully into everlasting happiness in the company of the eternal King together with all the saints".

Law and other church leaders had moved guilty clergy from parish to parish in MA without alerting parents or police.

Cardinal Law was accused of having moved paedophile priests from parishes rather than confront accusations. "On the occasion of his passing, we once again call on the Vatican to make a honest effort towards justice for all those abused by priests and to finally hold bishops accountable for protecting abusers at the expense of our children".

From 1984 to 2002, Law was the spiritual leader of Catholics in Boston, with nearly 2 million followers. "Why Law's life was so celebrated when Boston's clergy sex abuse survivors suffered so greatly?"

Law died early Wednesday in Rome after a long illness.

The archdiocese has a continued commitment to "provide for the assistance and support for victim survivors and their families, and to strive to maintain safe environments in all of our churches, schools, institutions, and agencies", said O'Malley, who succeeded the late cardinal as Boston's archbishop.

The "promotion" was a reference to St. John Paul II appointing Cardinal Law in 2004 to be the new archpriest of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the four major basilicas of Rome, after he resigned as archbishop of Boston in the wake of the abuse scandal.

"A little more than one year ago, we had to fire a manager of the university because he was stealing", the cardinal told CNA, and "shortly after, an anonymous defamatory paper was spread, filled with a series of calumnies of the kind published this week". He resigned amid a public uproar over his actions. She says she can't find it in my heart to forgive Law and that she thinks he should have been in jail.

Attorney Mitchell Garabedian said that "many victims are reminded of the pain". And though Law was not himself sexually abusive, his compulsion to cover up for those who were makes him a clerical forerunner of some of the men recently driven from secular jobs over allegations of sexual harassment.

The cardinal is now the leader of the pope's "C9" Council of Cardinal Advisers, which are in the process of reforming the Vatican bureaucracy.

In 1984, when the case of a child-molesting former priest in Louisiana by the name of Gilbert Gauthe was drawing attention to the problem, Doyle and others tried to warn the nation's bishops that abuse was widespread in American dioceses and they should clean house.

Vatican officials later appointed him to run a major basilica in Rome - a move which was condemned by critics as a reward for the cardinal.
