OIC welcomes UN General Assembly's resolution on Jerusalem

India maintained a cautious silence hours before the U.N. General Assembly convened to vote on the draft resolution regarding the status of the city of Jerusalem.

The General Assembly voted with a majority of 128 votes for the resolution, which was submitted by Yemen as the head of the Arab coalition, and Turkey on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, while nine states voted against, and 35 countries abstained.

Al Azhar called on the U.S. administration to withdraw its decision and abide by the objectives for which the United Nations has been established, primarily maintaining global peace and security, affirming that the Arab status and Palestinian identity of Al Quds must remain intact.

However, the fearless 128 voted with the United Nations resolution, while the not so courageous 35 refrained and the bully and the 8 blind followers voted against.

"Any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council", it added. The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, warned about 180 of 193 member states with "taking names" of countries voting in favor of the UN resolution, The Guardian reported.

However, the UN General Assembly resolution is non-binding.

On Dec. 6, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, and instructed to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which had been strongly opposed or condemned by the worldwide community. As a clear slap in the face of US President Donald Trump, many of America's friends voted in favor, including most European countries, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Switzerland and even the UK.

"We should wait for the voting to happen", said Raveesh Kumar, the MEA spokesperson, highlighting that India has policy on Jerusalem which does not come under any third party influence.
