Britain should apologise for Jallianwala: London mayor

Almost 100 years later, it remains a controversial subject as many British dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Phillip, and former prime minister David Cameron, have visited Jallianwala Bagh to pay their respects. "I want to make it clear that a memorial should take pride of place in London to honour those who served and died in the wars".

He touted that it was extremely moving for him to visit Jallianwala Bagh and one can never fail to remember the tragedy that happened here.

"My view is that British government should apologise for the Jallianwala Bagh shooting".

Hundreds of Indians, including women, children and the elderly, were shot dead by British troops led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer April 13, 1919. He described it as "an extraordinary event, a monstrous event, an event which stands in singular and sinister isolation" and which was "not the British way of doing business". Colonial-era records put the death toll at around 400, while leaders of the country's freedom movement said over 1,000 were killed.

In October, Mayor Sadiq Khan, whose grandparents were born in India and parents migrated from Pakistan to United Kingdom, said he would visit India and Pakistan to promote the British capital as a destination of choice for trade and cultural ties.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan visited the Golden Temple here on Wednesday.

British Prime Minister David Cameroon visited Jallianwala Bagh in February 2013 and expressed regret over the killings, stopping short of a formal apology.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee gave Khan a "siropa" (robe of honor) during the visit.

During his visit, he participated in langar at the Golden Temple complex and showed keen interest in knowing how the food is prepared. He met with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, several other officials and prominent personalities.

Mr Khan, who was on a three-city tour of India, visiting Mumbai, New Delhi and Amritsar, later crossed over into Pakistan from the Attari-Wagah joint check post land border between India and Pakistan, about 30 km from Amritsar. The London Mayor is now on a visit to India.
