The Dictionary.com 2017 Word Of The Year Is Basically "Ivanka Trump"

Searches for "complicit" increased almost 300% over past year as it hit just about every hot button topic from politics to natural disasters.

In fact definition searches for the word shot up almost 300 percent over last year - which is why Dictionary.com on Monday selected it word of the year for 2017.

The first of three major spikes for the word happened in March, the day after Saturday Night Live aired a sketch starring Scarlett Johansson as Ivanka Trump.

The site defines the word as "choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others".

In April, Ivanka caused the word to spike again, while defending herself against allegations that she was complicit in her father's actions, when she said "I don't know what it means to be complicit". Look out, Ivanka Trump. Because politics can make us silent when we should speak, and silence can equal complicity.

The perfume was marketed as "the fragrance for the woman who could stop all this, but won't".

He harshly criticised President Donald Trump and urged other members of the party not to stand silently with the president.

The word was also boosted by the bevy of sexual harassment scandals that have plagued public figures this year, beginning with Harvey Weinstein and his alleged team of assistants that made sure his misdeeds stayed in the shadows for decades.

"The sad fact remains that the accused, which now include Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, chef John Besh, actor Kevin Spacey, venture capitalist Justin Caldbeck, and many more, could not have carried out their actions without the complicity of many others who acted as direct accomplices or helped cover their tracks and shut down any victims who tried to come forward", a press release reads.

The post also cites controversial Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt as well as those who protected sexual predators in Hollywood as other examples of notable people who were "complicit" in 2017. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., announced in October that he won't seek re-election to Congress, citing a "flagrant disregard for truth or decency" in the Trump administration. Flake explained: "I have children and grandchildren to answer to, and so, Mr. President, I will not be complicit".
