Phil Parkinson issues big warning to Simon Grayson replacement — Sunderland manager search

Grayson managed just one win from 15 league games, and Gray believes appointing a replacement may prove hard.

Sunderland are once again on the hunt for a new manager after parting ways with Simon Grayson following a 3-3 draw with fellow Championship strugglers Bolton.

Grayson insisted on Monday that he had no regrets at leaving Deepdale to take on a challenge that has proved beyond a string of his predecessors, but now he has ample time to reflect on his ill-fated decision to move North to a club that appears to be in terminal decline.

Parkinson said: "I feel for Simon, he is a tremendous manager with a great record if you look through his career".

Next up for Sunderland is a tough trip to seventh-placed Middlesbrough on Sunday.

"Changing the mentality around is hard, he has obviously found it tough but will be back in management sooner rather than later".

"Who would want to take it?"

"He got 90 minutes under his belt which was very important and all-in-all I thought he played well and I'm pleased there was another goal for him. We normally go for a drink with the opposition manager but we will get on the coach and I will give him a call later in the week".

In a statement posted on the club website in the immediate aftermath of the game against bottom-club Bolton, chief executive Martin Bain said: "Simon and his team have worked tirelessly to achieve the best for the football club during their time here".

However for newly-promoted Bolton it was still a good result, building on a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday - their first league victory of the season - and 1-1 draws with QPR and Fulham.
