Macy's Sales on Black Friday Hurt by Problem with Processing Credit Cards

A Macy's spokesperson told CNBC it has taken longer than usual to process some credit and gift cards, but the retailer has added salespeople to its floors to try to help the issue. But it appears the crowds were too much of a good thing. The statement TechCrunch released has Macy's saying it resolved its system issues and sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience it may have caused during their valued customers' shopping experience.

The issues appear to have begun around noon ET.

There's no word yet on potential losses across Macy's outlets arising from not being able to process credit cards for several hours across multiple stores.

"The delays we experienced this afternoon were due to a capacity-related issue that caused some transactions to take longer to process", Macy's said in a statment.

Shoppers trying to place orders on Macy's website received the following message: "We're unable to verify availability of some item (s) in your order".

Earlier on Friday, Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette told The Associated Press said he was pleased with the kickoff to the season.

In particular, this Christmas is make-or-break for Macy's, which has posted 11 consecutive quarters of declines in "same-store" sales, and stock is down at least 70% from 2015.

Shares are down 0.4% postmarket; they had gained 2.1% in the shortened session on optimism for a strong Black Friday for the retailer.

"I can't think of anybody that needs this less than Macy's", he said.

Macy's has been eager to use the holiday season as a chance to test the impact of some of the in-store investments it has made over the past year.

The department store can't afford to turn off its customers.
