Jerry Jones backs off litigation threat over Roger Goodell

Just a few days after the NFL's compensation committee denied Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' request for an emergency meeting to discuss the contract of Commissioner Roger Goodell, the committee denied Jones' again. But that doesn't mean he's given up putting stumbling blocks in Goodell's way.

Though he says he won't sue, Jones told USA Today that he still wants all owners, and not just the NFL's six-member compensation committee headed by Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, to have input in the negotiations.

On Nov. 8, the New York Times' Ken Belson reported that Jones threatened to sue the league and some owners if plans for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's new contract weren't scrapped.

Jones and all of the other owners voted unanimously in May to let the compensation committee finalize Goodell's new deal. And here we are, with another fussy letter, which will get a similarly fussy response, and so on and so forth, until we all fall down from the force of the angry serious football men stomping their feet all at once.

Goodell's current deal as commissioner is set to expire after the 2018 season.

Jones had threatened to sue the league if the committee approves an extension, saying it should be reviewed and approved by all owners. It also says "urge Mr. Jones to support the Committee's deliberations, not attempt to sabotage them".

Blank wrote back saying that Jones was ignoring the facts "to satisfy your personal agenda".

After months and months of sluggish legal drama, Elliott was handed his six-game suspension two weeks ago. He can return to play for the Cowboys' penultimate game of the regular season on December 24.
