Indian-American elected New Jersey Mayor despite anti-Sikh propaganda

Within days of being associated with "terrorism" in a flyer during the run up to the mayoral election, Ravinder Singh Bhalla has become the first Sikh mayor of Hoboken city of New Jersey in the US.

The school board slate backed by Bhalla and by candidate Jen Giattino, who finished third, was victorious: Sharyn Angley (an incumbent), Melanie Tekirian, and Chetali Khanna.

"Thank you for having faith in me, for having faith in our community, faith in our state, and faith in our country; this is what America is all about", he told his supporters. The word "H (Y) UGE" was borrowed from Bernie Sanders, who ran against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2016.

New Jersey Governor-elect Phil Murphy took a victory lap in Hoboken yesterday.

Despite racist flyers circulating in their communities, three targeted New Jersey candidates won elections in their respective races Tuesday. Their pictures were mock-stamped "Deport".

In Sports, former WFAN host Craig Carton plead innocent to fraud charges in federal court, more details emerged in the plane crash that killed former Major League Baseball pitcher Roy Halladay and the New York Jets will face a former player when they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. "Cricket fields! Enough is enough!"

Sikhs have been targeted in the United States mistaken for West Asians, some of whom wear similar but not same kind of headgears, specially since September 11, 2001.

Bhalla had been the subject of anonymously distributed flyers that labeled him a terrorist.

Now, the polls are over, the dust has settled and Ravi Bhalla, the Sikh man in question, has risen as the mayor of the small town. "Of course this is troubling, but we won't let hate win", Bhalla tweeted with a picture of the flyer.
