NFL Sacks Trump Over Comments On National Anthem Protests

The symbolic gesture, initiated previous year by then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, snowballed last week following calls by Trump for team owners to fire athletes who sat out the anthem. "The fact that they can not control these people-what they say, what they do, what they believe, whether they sit, whether they kneel, whether they stand-it eats him alive and it is something that he can not control", CNN contributor and Temple University professor Marc Lamont Hill said. The team's Twitter account shared a video clip of the players on their knees. Larry McCullough, 18, took a knee while his cousin, Cedric "CJ" Ingram Lewis, 16, raised his fist in solidarity. Black men went to fight in World War I, and came back to this country and were lynched because they refused to cede the sidewalk to White people. (Note 2: The First Amendment enshrines and protects his right to Free Speech).

It became a hot-button topic this campaign after United States president Donald Trump criticised the National Football League and its players who kneeled in protest during the anthem.

All this happened this weekend because of what President Trump said. These protests have drawn criticism from fans, politicians, news reporters and former players. These players are not hurting anyone, nor are they forcing someone to do something that they don't want, they are publically protesting something they believe in. He began taking a knee instead on September 1, 2016 after talking to former Green Beret and former National Football League player Nate Boyer about the best way to make his point without disrespecting the military.

"We are taught as children to respect all of those who have made great sacrifices for our country", Kalafer said.

Every single player that kneels during the national anthem has that right. Teams around the country made the decision to show support and stand with their athletes in unity.

On its decision to eschew airing what has been a tradition for nearly a decade, Fox Sports said it would only air the national anthem for the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints game.

It is yet to be seen whether more Bombers will show signs of protest during the national anthem. It's about racial injustice and police brutality.

President Donald Trump's controversial remarks against NFL athletes have renewed the discussion of national anthem protests begun by Colin Kaepernick during the 2016 NFL season. You can have a legitimate debate about race injustices (I think they are way overblown by the media, but that is not the point), but protesting the anthem is not the way to do it.

The following Sunday the majority of the NFL's teams had at least one player protest in some manner.

For a little over a year this happened, and everything came to a head when President Trump spoke out against their actions at a campaign rally in Huntsville, Alabama, on September 22. Then, being the journalist that I am, I'd take out my camera, take the shot, and pray that when it publishes, the wave of fury doesn't drown us both.

He said he would stand when he felt that the American flag represents what it is supposed to represent: freedom. If they want to play football in this country then they need to respect our flag.

While most sports writers have been commending the owners of these teams for this display of support for their athletes, I personally question why they are just now coming out of the wood-work to take a stand. The protests continued October 1 as Cam Newton, quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, raised his fist during the anthem and most of the San Francisco 49ers kneeled.
